American Red Cross Short On Volunteers

The American Red Cross’s Northeast Pennsylvania Chapter seeks volunteers to help with oncoming extreme weather.

American Red Cross is expecting a volunteer shortage from now through July. Experts with the Red Cross forecasting this season’s weather to be more extreme than usual due to year-after-year increases in severity. The American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania seeks help from local volunteers to face the upcoming hurricane, wildfire, and flood season. Shelter support, Health Services, and Disaster Action Team members are needed most, but blood drive donations and collection volunteers are welcome.

Northeastern Pennsylvania chapter serves Bradford, Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Sullivan, Wayne, and Wyoming, Counties, with nearly 1 million people. The chapter provides food and shelter during emergencies. They also help by assisting the armed forces, including their families. Volunteers will learn lifesaving skills such as collecting blood donations. Training is free for all who choose to volunteer.

According to The American Red Cross’s Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter website, “The American Red Cross Northeastern Pennsylvania chapter serves residents of Bradford, Sullivan, Wyoming, Luzerne, Lackawanna, Carbon, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne Counties. With a population of nearly 1 million people, our chapter provides food and shelter in emergencies, assists members of our armed forces and their families, teaches lifesaving skills, collects lifesaving blood, and more. All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people”.

The most urgently needed positions, according to the American Red Cross:

SHELTER SUPPORT | These volunteers help at a shelter during large disasters by welcoming residents, serving meals, setting up cots, distributing blankets and personal hygiene kits providing information and assistance to people in need.

HEALTH SERVICES | The health services volunteers require you to use your professional skills with hands-on support. These volunteers will care for and educate the people at the shelters during large disasters. Qualified licenses required include the following: RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, and APRN.

DISASTER ACTION TEAM | Whether the disaster is large or small, Disaster Action Teams work by helping families who need aid by providing food, shelter, comfort, recovery assistance, and other support they require.

“The relentless pace of severe disasters has created additional and ongoing emergency needs, especially for families who have been displaced year after year by extreme weather events. As the growing number of climate disasters threatens lives on a near-constant basis, the Red Cross needs more volunteers to respond to these emergencies,” according to the AmericanRedCross.org “Volunteers make up about 90% of the Red Cross workforce. They are the heart of the organization, answering the call to help and care for others and give hope to those who need it most,”
